HMRC are making it as easy as possible for employers to pay back overpaid CJRS (furlough) grants.

For those who have received too much because they made an error in a claim, they can easily rectify this in the next CJRS claim online without the need to contact HMRC. If no further claims are planned, business owners will need to contact HMRC to make repayment arrangements.

Whilst they are not actively looking for innocent errors in their approach, they will charge penalties known for overclaims.

The notification periods are as follows:

  • 90 days after the receipt of  the CJRS grant not entitled to
  • 90 days after the date circumstances changed so that the recipient was no longer entitled to keep the
    CJRS grant
Or, on 20 October 2020, whichever of the two dates is later.
The main message is to ensure that you are honest with HMRC in order to avoid charges and the publishing your details as a deliberate defaulter.
